Texture is defined as the tactile quality of the surface of an object and how it feels if touched. It’s more than that for me; it’s an important part of my art. I love texture, color and repeating patterns in nature and objects of beauty, fine crafts and other artist’s work.
When I walk at the beach there is texture everywhere, shells, tall grass and the sand. Texture is what you see. I love the beach. The painting called “Coastal” was influenced by my many visits to Massachusetts beaches, Rhode Island and beaches of the Caribbean with my family.
The image that you see here is a close up, so you can see a few of the squares. I made them 3”x3” squares that I glue them together onto a board to make a 24”x24” piece of art which is the total size of this particular painting (it’s featured on my website landing page).
Texture is in our everyday life. Your clothes provide you with a whole array of textures: silky, starched, velvety, coarse, elastic. Even food and nature are full of texture. You look out the window or walk outside, and even though you can’t touch it, you can see the layers of texture in the leaves in the garden and bricks on the sidewalk. I use texture as a major influence in my work.
There is a joy in seeing the texture and bringing it to life in my art for others to enjoy. It makes me happy sharing it.
I suggest you take a walk and appreciate what you can touch and see in the beauty of nature.
